چکیده
Trends in the Transitory Variance of Male Earnings in the U.S., 1970-2004 We estimate the trend in the transitory variance of male earnings in the U.S. using the Michigan Panel Study of Income Dynamics from 1970 to 2004. Using both an error components model as well as simpler but only approximate methods, we find that the transitory variance started to increase in the early 1970s, continued to increase through the mid-1980s, and then remained at this new higher level through the 1990s and beyond. Thus the increase mostly occurred about thirty years ago. Its increase accounts for between 31 and 49 percent of the total rise in cross-sectional variance, depending on the time period.

Earnings Instability and Earnings Inequality in Urban China: 1989–2006 This paper investigates the evolution of earnings inequality in urban China from 1989 to 2006. After decomposing the variance of log of earnings into transitory and permanent two parts, we find that both components are important contributors to the total variance of earnings. We also find that the share of the transitory par...
متن کاملTrends in the Covariance Structure of Earnings in the U.S.: 1969-1987.
We examine the increasing variance of earnings of white men over the 1970s and 1980s by focusing on changes in the covariance structure of earnings. Using data from the Michigan PSID from 1969-1987, we find that about half of the increase has arisen from an increase in the variance of the permanent component of earnings and half from an increase in the variance of the transitory component, wher...
متن کاملComparing Earnings Management in Germany and the USA
This study presents empirical evidence concerning the effect of different accounting standard on earnings management. Prior studies have shown that accounting standards influence earnings management. Tighter accounting standards regime restricts management’s descretion to manipulate accruals, and at the same time, induce more costly real earnings management activities. To investigate this iss...
متن کاملCompeting sources of earnings inequality: A comparison of variance components
Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this study partitions competing sources of earnings variation into four components: a component for individual-level factors, a component for transitory factors, a component for occupational factors, and a component for geographic factors. From these variance components intraclass correlation coefficients are calculated and compared wit...
متن کاملThe Mis - Measurement of Permanent Earnings : New evidence from Social Security Earnings Data
This study investigates the reliability of using short-term averages of earnings as a proxy for permanent earnings in empirical research. An earnings dynamics model is estimated on a large sample of men covering the period from 1983 to 1997 following the cohort-based methodology of Baker and Solon (1999). The analysis uses a unique dataset that matches men in the 1984, 1990 and 1996 Surveys of ...
